Question Three

What have you learned from your audience feedback?

The target audience for my magazine was incredibly important from the beginning as the target audience are the consumers of my products and without them, my magazine would no sell. Due to this, I had to make sure to appeal as best as possible to my target audience. However, before this, I had to identify who my target audience would be. To do this, I first researched into the age of people getting married and the type of weddings most popular nowadays.

From this, I discovered that the average age to get married for women in the UK was 28 years old - however, due to this fact, every other UK bridal magazine will have this age for their target audience. Therefore, I decided that it would be best for me to lower the age of my target audience so that my magazine will stand out from the competition. From this, I decided that my target audience would be young women between the ages of 18-25. As well as this, I discovered that since 1993 civil marriages have been more popular than religious marriages and the gap between them has only been getting bigger. Due to this, I decided that my magazine would mainly cater towards civil wedding ceremonies as opposed to religious wedding ceremonies as it would not make sense to have my magazine cater towards religious marriages if there are fewer people getting married this way. I presented this information in the form of a pitch, which I received feedback from my class members for. From doing this, I made an initial target audience before researching further into my final target audience.

From doing this, I identified who I think my initial target audience would be and what type of lifestyle they would have, as well as their interests, likes, and dislikes. I, also, identified who I think my secondary target audience would be. From doing this I know what type of things I needed to include in my magazine to appeal to my target audience. Furthermore, I know how to appeal to my secondary target audience too. After doing this, I created a survey for people who generally read bridal magazines to find out the demographics of my readers. I then created another survey with more specific questions regarding themselves and the magazine. From the results (shown below) I was able to create my Reader Profile.

Target audience survey results from Hannah Ould

After conducting my Reader Profile, I knew who my audience was as a collective I needed to find out more about them individually so that I could envision who would actually be reading my magazine and consuming my products. I then conducted research and created audience profiles based on my target audience.

Audience profiles from Hannah Ould

After creating my audience profiles, I started to create my actual products using the current information that I had from the audience research that I had already conducted. After I had created the first drafts of my billboard and front cover, I emailed out a questionnaire to some members of my target audience to see what their opinions were/how I could improve and what they would like to see in my other pages/products.

This questionnaire proved to be very helpful as it allowed me to see what some members of my target audience liked the most about my current drafts and how I could link all of my products together. As well as this, I could see what conventions were successful and which ones needed improving upon. After doing this, I sought out ways to improve and looked into the existing magazines so that I could see how they used their codes and conventions in order to make a successful magazine, billboard, and website. Furthermore, receiving their opinions helped as if my magazine didn't appeal to my target audience then no one would buy it and it would be wholly unsuccessful as a product.
After using this feedback to further my construction work, I created the next drafts of my products. Following the completion of these drafts I created a survey to get the opinions of the target audience - this time it was anonymous, however, as people would be more likely to be honest if it was anonymous. I then recorded the results so that I could use it to improve upon my drafts.

Draft 1 feedback from Hannah Ould

Once again, I used the feedback to improve my drafts and used the constructive criticism to change the things that I needed to in order to create a higher standard within my products. Once I had implemented these changes, I got to work on my final drafts. Just like before, I emailed out a questionnaire to different members of my target audience in order to get their feedback.

This final feedback proved to be positive so there was nothing that I felt I could improve upon and was overal quite happy with my final products.

Current Drafts

Here are my current finalized drafts, that I have improved from the feedback that I have received. I have tried to keep a clear running theme throughout the front cover, contents page, article and billboard so that you can tell that they all belong to the same magazine. I have, also, tried to make the advert look different whilst not looking out of place within the magazine.

Advert Draft

Here is my current draft of my advert. I have added a floral image with a low opacity over my dominant image. This adds to the theme as it is an advert for a florist, however, the image is not overpowering and distracting to the audience that it will take away from the rest of the advert. This advert has a purple colour scheme so that it juxtaposes against the blue colour scheme of the rest of the magazine.

Article Draft

Here is my article page with the completed improvements from my feedback. I have made the main body of text a smaller font so that there is more to read on the page and I have added a box around the Something Blue logo so that it stands out more against the background of the page.

Front Cover Draft

In this lesson, I have been working on the improvements for my front cover. I have changed the barcode so that it is not blurry (however, I think I will remove the thick black line around it) and have changed some of the fonts for the sell lines (I am not sure about the colours, however, and may decide to change them).

Article Page Draft

In this lesson, I have changed the page number from 35 to 4 so that it fits within the criteria of the first four pages and I have made the drop cap in the into more noticeable by changing the font and making it slightly bigger. Also, I have enlarged my models in the image so that they stand out more and there is less blank space - I did this by using the lasso tool and the Content-Aware Scale found under Edit. Next time I will be adding more text to the article and beginning to work on my improvements for my Front Cover.

Contents Page Drafts

Here I have added more features to the list and added the corresponding page numbers. I have also added some information about the partner companies and have added a curved box around this so that it stands out against the white background. Finally, I have added the page number in the bottom left corner of the page. As well as this, I have added a satin background, however, I am not sure whether I like it. I, also, think I need to fill the blank space between the list of features and the web address.

Contents Page Draft

I have added two sub images to my contents page to try and make it better. These two sub images also relate to the list of features on the contents page. Also, I have made the page numbers and list of features smaller so that there is room for more, due to the fact that it looked to bare before. As well as this, I have added the logos of the partner companies that I have invented, however, they need repositioning as they are in an awkward place currently.
